Op 3 oktober gaf Michiel Nijdam een presentatie over de ontwikkeling en de toekomst van de havens in Europa tijdens de rederslunch die jaarlijks door het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam in Londen wordt georganiseerd.

De Noordzee havens zijn de belangrijkste verbindingen van Europa voor de handel met de rest van de wereld. De toenemende schaalvergroting heeft gezorgd voor een concentratie van goederenstromen in de havens die daar het meest voor geschikt zijn; de havens met diep vaarwater en een ligging in de economisch sterkste zone van Europa.

De ontwikkeling van opkomende economieën en de kwaliteit van de Europese producten zorgen ervoor dat op de middellange termijn Europa een goed uitgangspunt heeft om een grotere rol in de wereldeconomie te spelen. Hiervan zullen vooral de grotere havens in Noordwest Europa gaan profiteren. 

Europe has, in the medium term, a good starting point to play a greater role in the world economy

On 3 October, Michiel Nijdam gave a presentation on the development and future of the ports in Europe during the annual shipowner lunch, organised by the Rotterdam Port Authority in London.

The North Sea ports are the major routes of Europe to trade with the rest of the world. The increasing scale has led to a concentration of freight flows in the ports which are most suitable for economies of scale; ports with deep water and a location in the economical core zone of Europe. The development of emerging economies and the quality of European products ensure that in the medium term, Europe has a good starting point for a greater role to play in the world economy. Especially the larger ports in Northwest Europe will benefit from this trend.
