In response to the Port of Rotterdam’s need for solid knowledge, Erasmus University has bundled its maritime and port-related research and education in SmartPort@Erasmus, the center of excellence offering port related education and research. It aims to connect students, academics and practitioners from the private and public sector. SmartPort@Erasmus research and education connects multiple disciplines to create win-win-win situations.
The lunchmeeting of 13 November was about the European SELIS project. Donald Baan (Sr. business manager at Port of Rotterdam) and Larissa van der Lugt (Sr. researcher at Erasmus UPT) gave us insights in the project which was about innovations in the logistic sector to improve supply chain reliability.

The lunchmeeting of 10 september was very interesting. Rene de Koster, professor of logistics and operations management at the RSM gave a presentation about robotics in warehousing, a fast-moving trend that is going on at the moment. The Green EFFORTS, "Green and Effective Operations at Terminals and in Ports", is a collaborative research project, co-funded by the European Commissions under the Seventh Framework Program, aiming at the reduction of energy consumption and improving a clear energy mix in the seaports and at terminals. Existing and upcoming stricter air quality regulations together with the need to reduce energy consumption are raising ports and terminals' awareness of their carbon footprint.
