Thomas Breugem wins 2017 RAS Student Paper Award


PhD candidate Thomas Breugem has won the first prize in the 2017 RAS Student Paper Award contest on analytics and fact-based decision making in railway applications. RAS (Railway Applications Section), a subdivision of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), granted Thomas Breugem with a USD 1,000 cash prize for his paper ‘An Optimization Framework for Fairness-oriented Crew Rostering’.

After obtaining his MSc in Econometrics and Management Science (specialization Operations Research and Quantitative Logistics), Thomas Breugem currently works on his <link people thomas-breugem>doctoral thesis at the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) under the supervision of Dr. Twan Dollevoet and Prof. Dennis Huisman. In his research Thomas Breugem focuses on railway optimization, for example the rostering of NS personnel, while taking all kinds of difficult labour rules into account.

The Prize giving will take place on 22 October 2017 during the yearly INFORMS Conference in Houston, Texas.
