The best research – and the researchers responsible for it – have been honoured at the annual ERIM Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM). Academic prizes were awarded for achievements such as excellence in dissertations, and management impact.
The symposium takes place on 10 February 2017 and is organized by Flavius Frasincar, in conjunction with the PhD defense of Damir Vandic. It discusses some of the recent developments on Semantic Web and related language technologies and their application to decision support information systems. The invited speakers are Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Trevor Martin, Martin Gaedke, and Alexander Hogenboom.

In her dissertation ‘A License to Mine? Community Organizing Against Multinational Corporations’, ERIM’s Romy Krämer explores the practitioner concept of the license to operate and develops this into a theoretical framework. Furthermore, she sheds light on the organizing processes in anti-corporate movements and highlights the importance of national advocacy networks for successful movement building across borders
ERIM member Dr. Pamala Wiepking, assistant professor in the Department of Business-Society Management has won the prestigious Virginia Hodgkinson Research Book Prize. Together with Femida Handy, University of Pennsylvania, she was awarded with the prize in Washington DC on November 19 for their work on the book Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy.
In his dissertation ‘The Distance Dilemma: The Effect of Flexible Working Practices on Performance in the Digital Workplace’ ERIM’s Dominique van der Meulen explores how the extent of telework (through enacted temporal and spatial flexibility) affects employee and organizational performance
In his dissertation ‘Advancements in Demand Forecasting: Methods and Behavior’ ERIM’s Clint Pennings focuses on reducing or minimizing forecast errors in the retail industry.
ERIM member Dennis Huisman, Professor of Public Transport Optimization at Erasmus School of Economics, invented a new procedure for solving major disruptions on the rail network quickly which NS and rail manager ProRail will launch.
Basak Manders has been awarded the 2016 Quality Management Research Award for her PhD thesis entitled Implementation and Impact of ISO 9001, that she completed at Erasmus Research Institute of Management, Erasmus University (ERIM) in 2015. This award is presented each year by the Netherlands’ Network for Quality Management (NNK) and the Dutch Academy for Quality (DAQ) for management research that is conducted excellently, and is ground-breaking and innovative. In her research, Manders demonstrates that ISO 9001 leads to operational and market benefits in the majority of cases.
In his dissertation ‘Management of Emerging Technologies and the Learning Organization: Lessons from the Cloud and Serious Games Technology’ ERIM’s Andreas Alexiou looks into how specific organizational capabilities contribute to the successful management of emerging technologies. Furthermore, his study explores the potential of an emerging learning technology in facilitating learning and training in organizations.
