In this inaugural address, Professor Marius van Dijke confronts the major ethical challenges which have faced the business world in recent years and seeks to develop a comprehensive method to integrate ethics into business curricula and ultimately the mindset of decision-makers in the field.
In her dissertation Lameez Alexander confronts innovation in organizational settings and the broad consensus of innovation as the ‘Holy Grail’ of competitive advantage and growth. Lameez Alexander creates an innovation management model which (1) centre’s around ‘people’ as the key determinant of innovation, and (2) accounts for ‘innovation ownership struggles’ between two key actors, ‘innovators’ and ‘managers’.
ERIM’s Zhihua Li confronts the many dimensions of irrationality in her dissertation, ‘Irrationality: What, Why and How’. The ‘What’ develops an understanding on the topic of irrationality. ‘Why’ explores the influence of ambiguity on irrationality and the reasons we reject irrationality. Lastly, ‘How’ debates the idea of imposing better decisions on individuals when freedom of choice is lacking and proposes interesting recommendations in this regard.
ERIM’s Frederik Hogenboom investigates the inextricable link between financial events and financial markets, and develops a practical, semi-automatic, self-updating model which can exploit such insights in financial trading.
Professor Taco Reus discusses the dominant themes surrounding Global Strategy and discusses a framework revolving around the R3 of Global Strategy - resources, relations, and rules - with a focus on the broadening of rules which render the most benefits in an international context.
ShengYun Yang notes that the increasing complexity of the business environment and advent of prediction markets has significantly affected forecasting in firms. ShengYun’s research confronts two key research objectives; the development of an understanding of a traders dynamic behaviour, and an investigation into the effect of information transparency in prediction markets.
Kristiaan Glorie seeks to develop market clearing algorithms to improve clearing in real-life barter exchange markets, with significant attention paid to the scalability of said algorithms. With a focus on kidney exchange markets, Kristiaan develops algorithms which seek to alleviate the acute shortage of donors and improve the health outcomes of kidney patients.
ERIM’s Miriam Koning investigates how the media, auditors and regulators influence the process of financial reporting. More specifically, Miriam Koning examines the media’s critique of reporting practises, auditor selection, and the changing role of regulators arising from increased IFRS adoption.
ERIM’s Luuk Veelenturf confronts the inevitability of disruptions in railway planning and explains how models can be used to induce flexibility into scheduling, such as through consideration of small delays during planning. Luuk also presents interesting insights into how small issues can be mitigated before they become significant through ingrained flexibility.
The Dutch brewing industry, though renowned for its established players such as Heineken and Bavaria, features a surprising number of small, independent breweries. Jochem Kroezen examines this 'rejuvenation' of the industry and proposes a solution which lies in the combination of the resistance of consumers to established brewers, and building on the legacy of old breweries. Lastly, Kroezen demonstrates how other mature industries can benefit from the findings.
