Contention and Collaboration: Insights about Social Movement Tactics and Influence

Speaker

Abstract

Social movement actors use a variety of tactics to generate influence and potentially trigger political and organizational change. Some tactics, like protest, rely on contentious framing and disruption. Other tactics, like education or awareness campaigns, invite collaboration with third parties. In this talk I will discuss the dilemmas that movement actors often face when considering using different types of tactics. I will also show findings from a research project in which we examine environmental movement organizations that apply a variety of contentious/collaborative tactics and their localized influence on the environmental performance of corporate facilities.
