Theories of Attitude Stability and Change Predict Advocacy and Preference for Political Compromise

Abstract

People vary in the extent to which they believe attitudes are fixed (entity theorists) or malleable (incremental theorists).  In this research, I explore the implications for such theories on advocacy and preferences for political compromise.  Results indicate that incremental theories of attitudes can either increase or decrease advocacy, depending on the focus of the attitude holder.  Additionally, initial results show that entity theorists are more likely to disapprove of political compromise and changes in policy positions.
