Do Diverse Roles and Understandings of Value Impact Project Success in the Creative Industries? Insights from Exchange Theory

Speaker

Abstract

The creative industries are characterized by multiple actors with multiple expectations of processes and outcomes.  Literature suggests throughout this process that as well as the significance of the artefact, both social and cultural/creative value are present.  From an examination of cases in publishing and public art, data suggests that all three conceptualizations of value are present.  What becomes significant is participants’ different expectations of artefact, social and cultural values and how they are bridged and bonded by social capital.  It appears that a creative project can continue if one element of these values disappears (for example, the value of the artefact is questioned), however the continued presence of social value is critical if the project is to continue.  The implications for public goods (both direct and indirect outcomes) are highlighted, with the role that policymakers play in that process emphasized.
