Diverse Meanings and Measurements of Diversity

Speaker

Abstract

In recent years diversity researchers have paid more attention to the use of appropriate measurements of group diversity. Harrison and Klein (2007) presented a typology that delineated the term "diversity" into the separate constructs of separation, variety and dispersion, and discussed measurements of each. In this presentation the Harrison and Klein typology will be extended by presenting two distinct meanings of variety, by allowing each construct to be applied to different types of variable, and by deriving a theoretically-derived index of diversity for each combination. The advantages of correct specification will be demonstrated using both real and simulated data sets.
