Abstract

As of January 1, 2010, Professor Lucas C.P.M. Meijs is appointed as Professor of Strategic Philanthropy at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Meijs is the first professor connected to the Erasmus Centre for Strategic Philanthropy (ECSP) that has been founded in the course of 2009 by RSM, the Erasmus School of Economics and the Adessium Foundation with the objective to promote and facilitate research and education in the field of philanthropy and nonprofit organisations.

“It is great to have Lucas Meijs aboard. He has broad experience, numerous academic contacts and an impressive list of publications in the international field of nonprofit management and organisations. Furthermore his knowledge of, and connection to the nonprofit sector in the Netherlands is unprecedented.” says Charles Erkelens, director of ECSP. To this, he adds “In addition to Lucas Meijs, ECSP expects to appoint another professor within the course of 2010.”

Lucas Meijs:”As philanthropy is gaining importance in society and attention in academia, founding the ECSP at Erasmus University is very timely. I am looking forward to be part of this endeavour to create and disseminate practical knowledge for philanthropic organisations in The Netherlands and Europe. The coming years I want to focus my research on how philanthropic organisations can cooperate to safeguard the future of voluntary energy (both donations and volunteering) and how partnerships for impact should be managed by philanthropic organisations”.

Professor Meijs will give his inaugural address on the subject of Cooperation within the Philanthropic Sector on Friday 19 February at 16.00 hours at the Auditorium of the Erasmus University Woudestein Campus.

Lucas C.P.M. Meijs (1963) is already endowed Professor of Volunteering, Civil Society and Businesses at RSM since 2003. He teaches electives on nonprofit management, social entrepreneurship and courses on business-nonprofit relations. In the summer of 2003 he was a guest researcher at the Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit studies, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.
