Service tools: why bother?

Speaker

Abstract

Availability of, for instance, expensive machines in the semiconductor industry or medical equipment in hospitals is very important. An important part of this availability is maintenance delay: the time during which the equipment cannot perform its intended function because it is waiting for either user or supplier personnel, parts or tools associated with maintenance. In this presentation, service tools will be central. Service tools are tools used during maintenance actions for, for instance, cleaning or calibration. Service tools have a lot of similarities with spare parts, but also some crucial differences being coupling in demands and coupling in returns. In this presentation, I will discuss these similarities and differences, and will answer the question whether it is necessary for companies to use different models for service tools than the models currently available for spare parts. For this I will compare different evaluation models and following from the evaluation models different heuristics for the optimization of the stock levels. These models differ in whether or not the special characteristics are taken into account.
