PhD Track PhD position in Ports and Global Supply Chains
Ports have progressively developed into vital nodes in global supply chains, but the role of ports in these global supply chains is changing. This triggers a number of knowledge questions that are relevant to port stakeholders that include but are not limited to: port authorities, deep sea carriers, port terminal operators, port information system providers, freight forwarders, logistics service providers, customs, and shippers. The main research question reads as follows: By what methods can the role of ports in port supply chains be explored and leveraged, in order to take advantage of the unique position of the port in providing tailor-made solutions to individual shipper supply chains? In this proposal, we elaborate on the main research question with five interrelated focal areas: (1) The favorable position of the port as gateway of numerous individual shipper supply chains; (2) The development of value adding information services on digital platforms in the context of port supply chains; (3) The value add of the port expressed not only in economic terms, but also in terms of social and environmental performance; (4) The containerized international logistics system as a precursor of the "Physical Internet"; and (5) The development of the logistics ecosystem in and around the port in light of the previous and the role of the port authority in managing this.
