First NCA study in Medicine
The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease has published a paper that uses NCA to study motivation in people with schizophrenia. The journal, founded in 1874, is the world's oldest independent scientific monthly in the field of human behavior, and appears to be the first medical journal to publish a study that uses NCA.
The author team (with lead author Lauren Luther, photo) consisted of researchers from Indiana University, Purdue University, University of California, VAMedical Center, Hartford Hospital (USA), and Center for Metacognitive InterpersonalTherapy (Italy). Using a sample of 175 patients, they found that meta-cognition -the capacity to identify and then integrate mental experiences- is necessary for motivation. Motivation is important for the functioning of people with schizophrenia.
The abstract of the paper is on the publisher' s website, and the full text can be found at Research gate.
