Version 3.0 of the NCA software has become available. This version contains a statistical significance test for NCA. An article about the test was just accepted in the journal Organizational Research Methods. The test estimates the p-value of a calculated necessity effect size. A low p-value (e.g., p < 0.05), helps NCA researchers to prevent drawing false positive conclusions about the observed effect...
The article "A statistical significance test for Necessary Condition Analysis" by Jan Dul, Erwin van der Laan, and Roelof Kuik was accepted for publication in Organizational Research Methods. The paper presents a test to estimate the p-value of a necessary condition effect size. This enables NCA researchers to avoid false positives by testing the randomness of the effect size (empty space). When p < 0.01 the researcher can conclude that it is unlikely that the effect size is due to random chance. Soon the NCA software version 3.0 that includes the test will be available.

Wilfred Knol (photo) and colleagues from Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands and Han University of Applied Sciences, Arnhem, the Netherlands have published a paper on "Implementing lean practices in manufacturing SMEs: testing ‘critical success factors’ using Necessary Condition Analysis". The paper is in press in the International Journal of Production Research (free access).
2017 was a very successful year for NCA. The NCA community has grown to more than 400 researchers. Scholars have used NCA in their research, are currently using it, or are otherwise interested in the method. Publications with NCA have appeared in a variety of journals in different fields of social sciences, including psychology, business and management. NCA applications have entered the technical and medical sciences as well. Many NCA events took place, and more tools to apply NCA have become available.
