Mr. John Fentener van Vlissingen - who was a guest speaker at the ECFB's Navigating Family Businesses at the Crossroads on March 7th - pleaded for a more involved government when it comes to financing and growing family businesses in an interview with Financieele Dagblad (March 10). ECFB researchers prof.dr. Pursey Heugens and prof.dr. Hans van Oosterhout join him in this view.
They discuss a government funded investment fund to grow small and medium sized family businesses as well as less radical inheritance taxes. Prof.dr. Heugens opts for a 'soft landing' when it comes to inheritance tax since these can overwhelm the second generation and sometimes even lead to the sale of a family firm according to Mr. John Fentener van Vlissingen. He also pleads for less red tape on the governance side to encourage growth within small and medium sized firms.
