The dynamics of the Dutch floriculture breeding ecosystem
This project investigates the dynamics of the Dutch floriculture breeding sector. This sector currently views an increasing need to intensify company research, to be able to exploit opportunities resulting from new genetic engineering technologies. Firms apply different solutions to this need: joint research activities between firms from different subsectors in flower breeding, collaboration with universities or integrating horizontally to research across different types of flowers. This project looks at this situation from the perspective of the floriculture breeding ecosystem. The dynamics of that ecosystem in the past decades is mapped, which shows a recurring emergence of frictions between value creation and value capture, which are subsequently solved by collective action. The project raises the question which type of joint action is appropriate to solve the current bottleneck created by the increasing research intensity.
