Marten Boon and Klara Paardenkooper (both ESHCC) are PhD students working on the NWO-funded research project 'Outport and Hinterland. Rotterdam Business and Ruhr Industry, 1870-2010'. Initiated and supervised by prof. dr. Hein Klemann and dr. Ben Wubs, the project aims to write the history of the enduring economic relations between the Rotterdam port and its most important hinterland, the German Rhine-Ruhr area. The project consists of three subprojects, arranged according to three major transitions: the rise of the Rotterdam port (1870-1940), it’s transformation and growth during the transition from coal to oil (1945-1973) and, finally, the impact of globalization and the rise of containerization (1966-2010). Joep Schenk is working on the first project (interviewed previously by Abe de Jong), Marten Boon on the second and Klara Paardenkooper on the third project. For Business History@Erasmus, Klara and Marten interviewed each other on the subject of their projects.

Hein A.M. Klemann is professor in Economic and Social History at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. The 55 year old historian is specialized in the history of German-Dutch economic relations and of the economies of the occupied countries during the Second World War. Together with his Russian colleague Sergei Kudryashov he has just published the book Occupied Economies on this topic.

Since the Business History @ Erasmus platform was launched in early 2010, a growing number of scholars working the Erasmus University community have joined the initiative to meet, discuss and share their interest in Business History. However, we felt it was time to share their research interests and current work with a broader audience through a series of interviews with scholars involved in Business History @ Erasmus. Joep Schenk (1983) is a PhD student in business and economic history at Erasmus University. His research is about the commercial relations between the Rotterdam harbour and the German Ruhr area. He is interviewed by Abe de Jong.
